Year 7 Curriculum Guide

Mathematics

Students will follow a Scheme of Work which is based upon the National Numeracy Strategy Framework for Teaching Mathematics: Years 7 to 9. This will include a structured programme of whole class mental/oral sessions designed to build upon the work done in primary school and to sharpen and rehearse numeracy skills.

During the main part of the lesson students will work as a whole class, in groups or pairs or as individuals to cover various aspects of Mathematics as shown in the following outline.

  • Autumn Term
    • Number and Algebra
      - Patterns, sequences and algebraic formulae
      - Simplifying and substitution
      - Place value
      - Decimals
      - Directed numbers
      - Fractions and percentages
    • Shape, Space and Measures
      - Metric units
      - Area and perimeter
      - Angles
      - Co-ordinates
    • Handling Data

      - Multiples and factors
      - Ratio
      - Solving equations
      - Straight line graphs
    • Shape, Space and Measures
      - Angle rules
      - Drawing 2-D and 3-D shapes
    • Handling Data
      - Data collection
      - Presentation of data
  • Summer Term

    • Handling Data
      - Experimental probability
      - Real-life graphs
      - Comparisons using statistics

Calculators and computers will be used where appropriate. Students are expected to supply all their own mathematical equipment including a calculator. There are three 60 minutes Maths lessons each week and students will be set homework at least once a week. Some online homeworks will be set. Students have access to the class textbook at home via a CD.

Setting

From the beginning of Year 7 students will be taught in sets arranged broadly according to ability. The setting will be carried out using information from primary schools. Students are tested towards the end of each term and setting reviews take place regularly. Setting continues throughout Key Stages 3 and 4.
